Pi Day Painting

Miss Alvino, student teacher introduced Pi Day activities (because it was March 14, or 3.14).

Students painted the numbers of Pi up to 80 digits. Art concepts included achieving color contrast, and students looked at the paintings of Jasper Johns, an abstract artist who specialized in paintings of numbers.

Periodic Table Mobile

Here are a few students posing with our mobile of the Periodic Table of the Elements. Each student in eighth grade art was assigned one element. Using balsa foam, on one side they carved the atomic structure of the element. On the other side, they carved an image that represented

some fact about that element. For instance, the element Rhenium is from the same root word for rose, so the student below carved a rose on one side of the block.

Chromium was once used in chrome bumpers, so in one of the blocks above you see a chrome bumper on an antique car.

Here is the mobile showing what is completed so far. The next section of eighth graders will complete the mobile.

The Balsa Foam Special

Sculpture students created this tasty looking scene out of balsa foam. While this material is easy to carve, it is still quite challenging to imagine a three dimensional object this way, so this is quite good.

Student Teacher

We will have a student teacher for a while this year. Miss Alvino, an art education student from Corning Community College will observe and participate two times a week. To introduce herself, Miss Alvino presented her portfolio to art classes at Rowe. It was a great way for kids to learn what is involved in pursuing a career in art.

Since her specialty is paintings of sunrises and sunsets, she demonstrated the process of painting this type of art to our Drawing & Painting class.
